I decided to apply the same strategy for my new build. I wanted a system that met my current needs with room to grow. Synology’s read speeds dropped by 67-75% on encrypted volumes, whereas encryption had no effect on TrueNAS. That allowed TrueNAS to outperform Synology by 2.3x for small files and 3x for large files on an encrypted volume. I keep most of my data on encrypted volumes, so this test more accurately represents my typical usage. One of the surprises to me in writing this up was that I couldn’t find any good benchmarking tools for measuring NAS performance. There are tools that run on the NAS itself to benchmark local disk I/O, but that doesn’t reflect real-world usage.

Today there’s a wide variety of off-the-shelf options that can provide storage for a home or small business network. I recently tried to price similar components to what I was running in my home-built NAS boxes and came up with about $750. That's not all that much of a savings over the appliance devices, especially if you factor in not only your time, but the energy costs of a bigger tower machine. The Synology DS1817+ costs only $850, with everything set up, configured, and ready to run. If you’re short on cash, or if you don’t need that much space yet, just get one mirror. If you have to buy two more drives a short amount of time later, you’ve not lost much.
